Matty came to us over 3 and a half years ago at approximately 13 years old. He was neglected physically and mentally. His coat was severely matted, nails embedded into his paws, a large tumor on his back end and underweight. For any animal lover you naturally ask yourself why did this happen? We ask ourselves that over and over. When is it going to stop? We wish we had the answer, but for those animals that this happens to, Free To Be Me Rescue is here for them. We don't judge them on their looks or age. We rescue them because they need us and in some ways we need them. They give us hope that we can make a difference.
Matt had a long road ahead of him, but we didn’t care. After we were able to clean/groom him and get weight on him, it was time for surgery. The tumor had to be removed. It was not only painful, but he struggled to go to the bathroom. We knew he was a fighter and he proved us right again. The surgery was a success.
Now pain free, Matt blossomed with all the love he received. He adores being spoiled and having a fluffy bed to call his own. He truly never asked for much. But we have to be honest, he had his quirks and we don't blame him. We don't know what happened in his past life, but it left Matt with trust issues and mental scares and that was OK with us. When we would try to put a collar or harness on Matt, he would shake like a leaf. He would only let a few people pick him up to cuddle, but that was OK with us....we understood. If you had a treat or food(his favorite Cheese Its), he would be right there by your side trying to convince you he hasn't eaten in days. He was a funny and grumpy old man at the same time. Bottom line, we loved him. He was ours, one of our forever rescues. He affectionately became know as Matty D over the years. We know Matty was over the moon happy to be with us. We were his family and wouldn't have it any other way.
Today Matt gained his wings. He has a permanent place in our hearts and we will never forget him. We are honored that we were part of his life and could give him all the love he deserved. Thank you Matt for all the smiles, laughs and memories that we will cherish forever.
Your support is what helps us make these positive life changes happen like Matt. It’s so emotional and difficult at times, but you know what? It’s what we want and need to do with your help. We want to be their voice and help guide them through a better life that they deserve.
